Essentially, influencer marketing means using key figures in your field to attract more attention for your business. It’s much more complicated than that, however. To start, you have to identify the individuals who are influencers in your field and then build a relationship with them. Once you’ve built relationships, they may begin to share and promote your brand and content and thus gain a wider audience for your business.

Influencer marketing comes from the current need to build brand authority in order to gain better rankings. With factors like Google Authorship becoming more and more important, SEOs have to find creative ways like influencer marketing to convince their audience that they are trustworthy.

How to Connect With Influencers

Influencers in your field are the people who hold lots of sway with your target audience, so look for individuals who are actively engaging the community within your industry. Ideally, these people will also already have an established following, particularly on social media. The point is to connect with someone who has real clout in your field.

Once you’ve targeted certain influencers who could help your brand, do some research to see what kind of content and products appeal to those influencers. If you can publish content that specifically relates to their specialty, those influencers will be much more likely to share your content and develop an interest in your brand.

In addition to building relevant content, you have to demonstrate why your business is valuable to the influencer’s audience. Maybe your products meet a certain need within their audience, or perhaps you simply have the same target audience. Whatever the connection is, you need to make sure that it will be clear to the influencer.

Is It Really That Important?

The short answer is yes, it absolutely is that important. Whether you are connecting with macro-influencers or micro-influencers (you should be connecting with both), these are the people who can directly connect with your potential customers in the midst of your sales cycle. An influencer’s opinion can directly impact your customer’s choice about whether or not they want to be in business with you.

Don’t forget, the dangerous side of influencer marketing is that influencers can also deter your audience from choosing your company. If you aren’t building a relationship with these influencers, they may not ever get the chance to form a positive impression of your brand.

Finally, you need influencer marketing because you need authority, plain and simple. As Google continues to issue harsh updates, the focus of current SEO keeps returning to quality and authority. Authority can only be gained through high quality SEO practices like connecting with influencer marketing!
