Last week, Yelp introduced a new feature to their popular review website. Called Yelp Platform, this feature allows users to make transactions through Yelp, primarily by ordering food for delivery and pickup. Currently, the service is limited to New York and San Francisco, but Yelp will soon allow users across the country to order food and conduct other transactions without leaving the website.
How Does It Work?
Yelp has partnered with established food delivery businesses Delivery.com and Eat24, who in turn work with over 100 local businesses in New York City and San Francisco. Yelp founder Jeremy Stoppelman stated that this is “staging” before they enter new markets across the country. A restaurant with the option for delivery and pickup via Yelp will have a box on the page titled “Order Delivery or Pickup” that prompts you to enter your address before beginning your order.
Yelp is not the first website to offer food delivery and pickup services. Seamless and GrubHub recently announced a merger of their online delivery services, allowing the two companies to reach over 20,000 restaurants in over 500 cities across the U.S. In addition, Groupon introduced a restaurant booking program last week, and Amazon.com has been expanding its grocery delivery service, AmazonFresh.
The addition of Yelp Platform will allow Yelp to extend beyond being just a review website, a process the company has already started with features such as “Call to Action” and Yelp Deals, which help businesses provide discounts and offers through Yelp. The fact that their share price has almost doubled this year demonstrates the popularity of these new features.
What’s Next For Yelp?
Of course, Yelp plans to go beyond simple food delivery and pickup services. In addition to expanding Yelp Platform outside of NYC and San Francisco, Yelp will eventually begin offering the ability to book appointments with spas, yoga studios, salons, dentist offices, and more. This will take place through partnerships with other companies such as Booker, MindBody, and Intuit’s Demandforce. Yelp Platform is currently available for desktop, mobile web, and iOS. An Android platform is coming soon.
Will your company take advantage of Yelp Platform?
