On the heels of Yahoo’s latest change to their logo, it appears that changing logos has gotten into the psyche of a lot of internet users. Recently, one Reddit user took the wildly popular Game of Thrones HBO series themes and masterfully combined them with the terribly popular NFL to create new logos for their teams. All of his efforts were extremely popular on Reddit and went viral over the past few days throughout the net.
What did Tim Proby Do?
Tim Proby, the Reddit user in question, created sigils (or logos) of all 32 NFL teams through the lens of the Game of Thrones universe. As Sam Laird wrote on Mashable, “Proby posted the final results to Reddit on Wednesday, where they were met with acclaim.” It took a few days but now the logos are popping up all over the internet.
Logos (and Their Relationship to the Brand)
Yahoo did a great job turning the process of changing their logo into a media event over thirty days, getting them plenty of attention and buzz online. However, what more will come of the logo change is probably not very significant for Yahoo. I’m not expecting thousands of internet users to suddenly start using Yahoo because they like their logo better. It got the company press and some attention, possibly new users, but I can’t imagine it being very significant.
On the opposite side of things, companies have gone to great lengths to defend a logo when things go wrong. Efforts are made even when it seems almost futile to do so. An example of this occurred just this morning in Bangkok for Thai Airways. As Simon Busch and Chuck Thompson reported for CNN, a “plane that skidded off the runway … had its logos blacked out by workers after the accident.”
Despite the obvious fact that the plane in question was a Thai Airways plane, the company went to great lengths to keep the logo and the name out of the media to come from the accident. The association of a downed plane with that logo would most certainly hurt their business, and the news story itself probably already did.
The Most Important Lesson from Tim Proby’s Work for Agencies and Businesses
Whether Tim Proby realized it or not, he was merging two brands and two relatively exclusive groups of consumers in a way that attracted both groups in an equally effective manner. The logos appeal nearly perfectly to the aspects of Game of Thrones that are popular as well as to the emotion, loyalty, and action of the NFL teams themselves. For me, these logos display the perfect combination of two extremely popular worlds in a way that will probably bring some crossover fans.
I can see some NFL fans thinking, “Hey, these logos are pretty cool. I wonder what all this Game of Thrones stuff is all about?” The same could be said for Game of Thrones fans suddenly having a different perspective on NFL teams thanks to the artwork of Tim Proby. And of course, anything that generates buzz on the internet and in social media is always a big plus for those involved (as long as it’s positive!).
There’s no reason why a business or agency couldn’t reach out to fans to help them reimagine their logos. There’s nothing wrong with relying on the extreme popularity of shows like Game of Thrones or other popular media to give your brand or logo a little boost. Keep things creative, engaging to fans and customers, and interesting. If it engages customers or brings in fans that wouldn’t have heard of your brand in the first place, that’s a success to me.
