Think Outside the House

Like so many other content generation firms, Content Equals Money is based out of my house. I have a pretty small group (under 10) of virtual workers. These are writers, editors, our VA and more. So as you can imagine I don’t get out of the house much, since I spend 12+ hours in front of the computer each day.

There is a lot of benefit to working from home. I get to be in my PJs a lot, I get to play with my dogs during my lunch break and more. However, it’s important to think outside the house when you are networking.

The reason I bring this up now is because I have to pull myself away from the computer tomorrow to visit our local BBB branch. We’re going to be giving away a 3-month contract of full service content marketing at this year’s Central Kentucky Home, Garden and Flower Show. It will be a part of the BBB’s Silent Auction table.

I know, it doesn’t sound all that exciting. We all spend so much time getting our G+ page up or tweaking our tweets that a local convention center doesn’t pique our interest.

However, this is stuff we need to do. Personal touch and face to face conversations are pivotal to your business’ success. Otherwise, you are just another logo or face clamoring for attention.

More substantial companies like Marketo have their own events—and they have shared that the ROI of these events is pretty spectacular. Which is fantastic for them, but when you are still building your presence online it would be sort of silly to drop the cash for a live event. So instead I would encourage all of you to find an event in your area.

Not everybody gets to go to SXSW this year. But that doesn’t mean you are left out in the cold. Go to lanyard.com and find some events in your area. They could be anything in your industry or even just a Home and Garden show. The point is to get out and shake some hands. Building a completely virtual business is awesome, but that doesn’t mean you should limit yourself to online promotions.

Think outside the house.
